Surviving Climbing's Diciest Business: Rappelling
Climb long enough and you’ll have a close encounter ... or several. Mine was in 1986 at Arches National Monument, five minutes up the black- top north of Moab.

To the Rescue
It's 5:45 a.m. and I'm standing in a line of people that wraps around the Camp 4 parking lot. It feels like I'm waiting for concert tickets but this i...
Altered State
A tricky crux, a surprise pop, a very fast 15-foot descent. I was delighted to find myself dangling from my beloved little blue Metolius. But when doing a quick body inventory, I noted that my left foot was attempting an inward 180. Suddenly, explosively, it hurt like hell. My partner Peter quickly lowered me, winced, and suggested we call an ambulance.
PMI Fingerless Gloves
TAKE A LOOK AROUND THE nation’s top sport-climbing areas and you’ll see all the hotshots feeding slack and catching falls while outfitted in various makes of fingerless gloves.

Medical Advice
Wrist: Ruptured Tendon
Recently I strained my wrist quite badly while climbing. Slopers and pinches are painful. I’m concerned about pushing it too hard to the point of tearing cartilage. I just feel that most doctors, no matter how you explain it to them, don’t understand climbing at all.
Training Tips
Why Short is Strong
Obviously, it takes more than a sick strength-to-weight ratio to rule the rock: A tall guy has a reach advantage, and big biceps do not replace great footwork. However, when it comes down to it, the little climber is the one with the biggest advantage.
Gear Advice
