The Stonemasters Climb at Pirates Cove
John Long relives the adventures of the Stonemasters when they first began rock climbing at Pirates Cove at Newport Beach, California.
Devil's Advocate
In a place defined by vertical geometry, I am the lone exception.

As a climber of decades, I am no stranger to seemingly insane positions and situations, the kinds of things that predictably and, I admit, satisfyingly cause sightseers to unhinge their jaws.
John Rosholt: Climber and Gambler Disappears in Las Vegas
John Rosholt, longtime climber and professional gambler disappeared in Las Vegas in 2005. What happened?
Altered State
A tricky crux, a surprise pop, a very fast 15-foot descent. I was delighted to find myself dangling from my beloved little blue Metolius. But when doing a quick body inventory, I noted that my left foot was attempting an inward 180. Suddenly, explosively, it hurt like hell. My partner Peter quickly lowered me, winced, and suggested we call an ambulance.
Scarpa Instinct VS
The Instinct VS has some great performance features. It is built on an almost identical last to the Boostic and edges really well. A large swath of rubber covers the top of the toes, allowing you to do some tech’ed-out toe hooks a la Dave Graham, and the heel cup has the vacuum fit that I love.
