Climb Safe

Features

John Long: It Started with a Pile of Stones
Chasing ghosts on Hawaiian sea cliffs.
Souvenirs
After seven harrowing weeks gunning for one of the most striking lines in Pakistan, the north ridge of Shingu Charpa, the author comes away with a surprising gift.
Spotlight: Alexander Ruchkin - Russian Locomotive
Ruchkin, 42, was the technical force behind the 2004 first ascent of the north face of Jannu, part of the "Big Walls" the Russian Way" series of 10 first ascents envisioned by Alexander Odintsov. Ruchkin has been present for five of the seven routes completed, including those on the Troll Wall, Norway; Trango Tower, Pakistan; and Great Sail Peak, Baffin Island. This summer he will attempt the north face of Masherbrum in Pakistan.
A Sport for All Ages
At this the most lovely old man got up at the furthest and humblest end of the hall, as he had got up on all similar occasions for the past half-century.
Black Diamond Reactor Ice Tool
Clean, simple, elegant - a couple of years ago, I would never have used those words to describe a leashless ice tool with an offset grip. But that was before I held a set of the new Black Diamond Reactors in my mitts. While the security of leashes (the futzy bastards) will always occupy a fond place in my heart, leashless climbing is here to stay.
