Reclimbing the Classics: Mirko Caballero Climbs the Trad Testpiece Grand Illusion (5.13b)
In 1979, Tony Yaniro established the hardest rock climb in the world, climbing a 40-degree overhanging crack in a dihedral at Sugar Loaf mountain in Lake Tahoe, California. He named the route Grand Illusion (5.13b). The route is now a classic testpiece for the elite trad climber. In the latest episode of Reclimbing the Classics, 13-year-old crusher Mirko Caballero faces off with the Grand Illusion, and also learns the sordid history behind Yaniro's first ascent.
