bobby model has returned to the states and his condition is improving

Online News Article

Adventure photographer, longtime climber and first ascentionist Bobby Model, 34, was seriously injured after being hit in the head by a cement block that was thrown through the windshield of his vehicle in Cape Town, South Africa, in mid-June.

A past resident of Cody, Wyoming, Model was visiting from his current home base in Kenya, traveling with his sister Faith, who was driving but unhurt. Model has been hospitalized since the accident, and despite fighting pneumonia, his condition is improving, and he has returned to the States. He is now at Mt. Sinai hospital in New York.

On June 26, Faith wrote: “Bobby's eyes now flutter a bit and he's been swallowing and moving his mouth, particularly when he's being spoken to or in response to pain. He's not at all happy with the vast array of tubes poking into his arms and he's been fighting pneumonia, which is tiring. They are trying to wean him off the ventilator completely, which will greatly reduce his risk of infection. His vitals also stabilized a little bit from yesterday. He's tough, resilient and fighting and I'm so very proud of my brother. He's extraordinary.”

Model, who climbed Trango Tower with Todd Skinner, Steve and Jeff Bechtel and Bill Hatcher, was named a National Geographic Society “emerging explorers” last year.
