Top climbers corralled themselves in Alabama this weekend for the seventh annual Horse Pens-40 competition. The event was the second part to the Triple Crown Series, which kicked off October 3rd with the Hounds Ear Competition in North Carolina (see the online article here: http://www.rockandice.com/inthemag.php?id=430&type=onlinenews).
In the women’s open the top climbers were Alex Puccio placing first and Kate McGinnis coming in at a close second. Francesca Metcalf took third.
“I have been there [to Horse Pens] every year for the past seven and it is starting to make me feel very old. I can still hang with the big guns though,” reports McGinnis on http://www.prana.com/. “Highlight sends of the day included Slider (V9), Ghetto Superstar (V9), and repeating some of my favorites in the boulderfield (Consumption, Chevy, Stepchild, and Great White).”
On the men’s side Jimmy Webb, reigning King of the Triple Crown, again took first with Jeremy Walton following close behind and Carlo Traversi placing third.
Competitors arrived on Friday night for pre-registration and the chance to visit sponsor booths, and feast on chili and beer. Blue skies kicked off Saturday and climbers got the chance to build up their scorecards till 4:30 p.m.
The evening festivities included the band Jambalaya and costume contest. Costumes included a Garth and Wayne duo, a dancing dirty Johnny and “Baby” couple that sported some famous dance moves, and Things 1 and 2 following around a Dr. Seuss.
This year Triple Crown’s sponsors, volunteers, and competitors have raised $16,677 for access to climbing resources. The event raised over $800 for the Southeastern Climbers Coalition ,which will go towards paying off the loan on the recently acquired Steele property.
