The Exum Guide was designed with input from one of America’s oldest guide services, Exum Mountain Guides in Wyoming. These guys roam the Tetons in all conditions and, consequently, the namesake mid-top approach boot shines in a variety of circumstances. The higher top acts as a cuff that keeps out dirt, scree and ankle-deep snow. The heel cage adds stability and protects the foot. The pull tab is easy to clip and the sticky rubber makes the boot a clunky but surprisingly effective climbing machine, especially on low-angled terrain. The welt is crampon-compatible, but you’d want to seal the Nubuck leather before going hog-wild in slushy spring snow. This is a great all-around, three-season boot that’s serviceable on well-beaten trails to burly via ferratas and onto the steeps.
