George Lowe, part of the Everest summit team with Edmund Hillary in 1953, died on Wednesday. He was the last surviving member of the team.
While Lowe did not climb to the summit, he played a large role in the success of the expedition by ferrying loads up the South Col to support Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay's summit bid.
Lowe was born in New Zealand in 1924 and climbed throughout the Himalaya, including on Cho Oyu, before climbing Everest. He also participated in the first successful land traverse of Antarctica.
