A long-term Hueco Tanks project completed by Dave Graham in March has now been repeated by an El Paso, Texas, native. Sam Davis started working the problem in January when Keith Allen Peters showed the wall to both him and Graham. “He (Peters) was looking at a line on the right, and Dave and I started to see the line in the middle which would later become Blood of a Young Wolf,” Davis wrote in an e-mail to Rock and Ice.
The route is located right below Sledge Hammer (V9) in the Maiden Gulley in a “dark pit.” Davis told Rock and Ice that the first moves gave him a bit of trouble. “If you don’t hit it exactly right it really makes the next sequence a lot harder. Conditions in the cave are weird too. It almost didn’t matter what the outside conditions were, and it could also change between tries if the breeze died.”
This is the second V14 for Davis, who sent the Hueco Tanks classic Esperanza in January. Lately he has been trying the Machinist (V13) and Desperanza (V15), and notes, “In Hueco, you’re never too far from a project no matter where you are!”
