Western Mountaineering Versalite $500
Rating 10 F
Field Rating 10 F
If you are mostly using a reliable tent and you want a bag to take you comfortably from above freezing to below zero, the Western Mountaineering Versalite is the winner. It is a heavyweight bag packed in a lightweight body. By itself this bag will take most sleepers comfortably to 10 degrees and with layering, to zero.
one of the testers claimed that "This thing has more loft than my -20 four-pound bag." Everyone agreed that the Versalite is the warmest bag for its weight that they have ever used. The Versalite's hood and collar and draft tube are plumper than those on some sub-zero bags that weigh twice as much. The Versalite isn’t a claustrophobic mummy, either. You can comfortably wear a light down jacket and pants inside. A full-length zipper and the ability to shift down from top to bottom gives the Versalite a wide comfort range. This was the consensus favorite for cold weather, tent camping.
Extraordinary warmth for its weight.
Versatile comfort range.
Could be comfortably used on Andean giants such as Aconcagua, with limited layering at high camp.
ExtremeLite ultra-lightweight nylon shell isn’t as weatherproof as the Feathered Friends eVent or Marmot's Membrain. The Versalite belongs in a tent.
