A man and a woman were found dead Tuesday, January 22, near the peak of Mt. Hoken in Nagano's Central Alps.

The two were identified as Masaya Sano, 32, of Matsumoto, and Kazumi Fujimori, 29, of Ueda.

According to police, the pair fell from near the 2,931-meter peak and went missing Sunday afternoon.

Sano and Fujimori, along with Sano's wife, went to climb the mountain Sunday and were planning to return the same day. Fujimori had very little experience with winter mountaineering and fell along with Sano, who was roped in with her.

Sano's wife descended from the mountain and told the police of the incident.

Autopsies showed they had died of brain contusions.
