Internship Opportunities

Want Publishing Experience?

Rock and Ice and Trail Runner offer intern opportunities. Now is your chance to roll up your sleeves and get dirty in print and online!

Info:
Both magazines offer internships in the editorial department and the advertising department throughout the year. Internships are unpaid, but typically receive college credit and earn valuable experience and an add-on to their resumes. Dates and hours are flexible, but interns should plan on working at least 20 hours a week. Internships are in Carbondale, Colorado. Additional paying work in the area is usually not difficult to find, but housing can be an issue. Look for housing ahead of time! Please bring a laptop, if possible.

Editorial Internship

Duties:
Internship duties vary depending on experience, expertise and willingness to learn, but typically include:

  • Writing magazine pieces
  • Writing website pieces, especially news (we'd like to see at least one news item posted every day)
  • Researching stories and fact checking
  • Copy editing
  • Brainstorming for article and marketing

We ask each intern to arrive with at least three article ideas.

Requirements:
Interns must be motivated and self-sufficient, and expect to work on their own. Interns need to seek out ideas, subjects and projects and follow through. Good candidates will demonstrate a willingness to learn, have writing/editing experience and climbing or trail running experience, and detailed knowledge of the magazine.

Perks:

  • Get the inside scoop on how magazines really work
  • Hang with an office of fun, outdoorsy folks who want to make you part of the team
  • Experience the world-class climbing and running on Colorado's Western Slope
  • Break into the magazine field
  • Go bouldering every Tuesday night

If interested, please send resume, cover letter and writing clips (college pubs are OK) to Alison Osius

Climb Safe

Features

TNB: The Only Blasphemy
John Bachar laces up his boots and cinches the sling on his chalk bag. “Ready?” Only then do I realize he means to climb all two thousand feet solo, without a rope. To save face, I agree, thinking: Well, if he suggests something too crazy, I’ll just draw the line. I was the first to start soloing out at Josh anyhow.
The Prophet
In 2001, Leo Houlding and Jason Pickles made an audacious ground-up, no-drill, on-sight attempt to free climb a new route on El Cap. Nine years later, The Prophet finally spoke.
Thomas Bubendorfer: Eiger Legend Back in the Game
The legendary Eiger speed-climber Thomas Bubendorfer, 50, who blew everyone's collective mind in 1983 when he speed soloed the Eiger North Face in an astonishing 4:50, has been active again establishing hard new routes in the Northern Salzgurg Alps of Austria.
TNB: American Dirtbag
Where are all the dirtbags? I'm not talking about these imposter dirtbags, the new-age lurkers taking up all the parking spots at Camp 4, Indian Creek and Miguel's Pizza with their pimped-out, Direct TV-receiving Sprinter vans that look like college dorm rooms on 26s.
MSR Reactor Stove
It was only a matter of time before MSR, the Toyota of climbing and backpacking stoves, picked up the gauntlet shoved down its throat three years ago by the upstart Jetboil, which unleashed an integrated stove and pot that touted fast boil times, decent performance in wind, and the best fuel-efficiency ever seen in a propane/butane canister cooker.
