Robert Pizem – Father First, Climber Second
Robert “Piz” Pizem parked at the north end of Rifle Canyon a little before 10 a.m. Sunday. Two blond boys, ages 2 and nearly 4, spilled out of the car and began whizzing around the parking lot, one holding a red toy airplane. Pizem, a tall, thin man of 40 with curly red hair, remained unfazed and organized the family’s gear.
Eight Day Solo First Ascent of Bigwall Route on Mt. Huashan, China
One man, eight days, 20 pitches, and nearly 2,000 feet of solo climbing—He Chuan, of China, pioneered a new line up the South Peak of Mt. Huashan in west China. Chuan named the route Climb Like You Are Dying (VI A3- 5.10+ R).
British Team Makes First Ascent of The Mirror Wall, Greenland
4:20 a.m. on July 22 Leo Houlding lead Joe Möhle, Matt Pickles, Matt Pycroft and Waldo Etherington to the summit of Greenland’s Mirror Wall, claiming the first ascent of its nearly 4,000-foot northwest face. The British team had been on the wall for 12 days and free-climbed 23 of the 25 pitches. An upward snowstorm greeted them for the topout.
