Weekend Whipper: How A Helmet Saves Lives
The Fisher Towers of Utah have a formidable reputation. With sandstone akin to dried mud, these crumbly towers can frighten the hardest trad climber. In this Weekend Whipper, a climber encounters a section of extreme choss on the Cottontail formation. His only choice is to place a few marginal cams and try to free-climb past. But while navigating a veritable land-mine of loose holds, the climber pulls on the wrong one and takes a 30-foot ride right onto his head, putting his helmet to good use.

What’s the steepest rock climb in the world? It’s not in Kentucky, Colorado or Catalunya. The world-record roof climb is in the Sultanate of Oman about 62 miles southeast of Muscat. The route, Into the Light (13 pitches, 5.14a) wends its way through one of the largest known cave chambers, a spooky abyss called Majlis al Jinn—The Meeting Place of Genies.
