Ruana’s father Rudy reports via Facebook that the send was totally unexpected.

“It was supposed to be a work session. Ian Yurdin encouraged him up…talking him up to the next ‘good’ hold.”

At just 13-years-old, Ruana’s rock-climbing progression is astonishing. He has been on a sending spree lately, ticking off one Smith Rock testpiece after another. Prior to climbing To Bolt, Ruana had managed to send the Smith Rock classics Scarface, Chemical Ali, and Mr. Yuk, all of which hold the 5.14a grade.

Ruana broke into the coveted 5.14a realm last April with a send of God’s Own Stone in the Red River Gorge. To Bolt or Not to Be is his fifth 5.14a.
