“We’re not trying to hook a fish for you. We’re trying to teach you how to fish.”
– John Long

Writers and aspiring writers, it’s time to sign up for the John Long Writing Symposium,
hosted by Rock and Ice and sponsored by Adidas. An intimate gathering, it will take
place in Carbondale, Colorado, July 6-11.

The week-long course is the only chance to learn from the master of climbing writing and Rock and Ice Senior Contributing Editor John Long.

“The John Long Writing Symposium was instrumental in providing me with the tools and confidence to continue to pursue the craft of climbing writing and to improve my overall writing skills. I throughly enjoyed and benefitted from my time at the JLWS.”

– Owen Clarke, 2017 JLWS

The John Long Writing Symposium offers all varieties of instruction on creative storytelling, reporting, magazine writing and on writing well. The top stories written by students will be published in the print edition of Rock and Ice, and all stories will be eligible for online publication.

Students will also receive additional instruction by the award-winning Rock and Ice editorial team: publisher Duane Raleigh, editor Francis Sanzaro and executive editor Alison Osius.

More from the students themselves:

In 2017, I participated in the John Long Writing Symposium in Carbondale, CO. John Long, the R&I staff and the guest
writers shared their adventure writing artistry with reverence. The insight, encouragement, and tools I received exceeded
my expectations. I felt a great sense of accomplishment when I completed, “A Love Story – One Pitch at a Time.” I now know what it takes to be a great adventure writer thanks to the JLWS.
