The 2016 USA Climbing Sport and Speed Youth National Championships wrapped up yesterday with Margo Hayes and Brian Huang, both Team ABC members, taking first place in the Junior Sport competitions. Ashima Shiraishi, who decided to compete despite sustaining a 45-foot ground fall last week, won the Youth B division. “Wow so psyched to have decided to compete this weekend,” she wrote on
Instagram. “I felt scared to climb for the first time in a while. I would like to thank all of my friends who helped me ‘recover’ mentally and reminded
me of how much I love this sport.”

The championships, held at the Stone Summit Climbing & Fitness Gym in Kennesaw, Georgia, hosted 104 teams from all over the country. Team ABC, based
in Boulder, Colorado, ranked first for sport climbing, with Utah’s Team Momentum finishing in second and Team Texas in third. In speed, Team Texas
placed first, with Stone Summit and Vertical World placing second and third.

Drew Ruana, who last year placed first in the Youth A competition, came in tenth after his foot “slipped low on the finals route,” he posted on Instagram.
“I somehow podiumed in 3rd place in speed climbing … something I thought I could never do,” he wrote. At the end of the championships, Ruana
was nominated for the North Face’s prestigious 2016 Young Gun award.
