Nalle Hukkataival on The Understanding. Photo courtesy of <a target=StefanSchlumpf.com ” />A long-standing bouldering project in Magic Wood, Switzerland finally saw an ascent on Saturday when Finnish climber Nalle Hukkataival unlocked the sequence and stuck the redpoint. The climb was first discovered and cleaned over ten years ago but up until Saturday, nobody had been able to successfully complete the route. On his blog, Hukkataival writes that, “this beautiful project caught my eye the very first time I saw it on my first trip to Magic Wood back in 2004.” After attempting the climb several times over the years, Hukkataival was finally able to unlock the sequence and top out the problem, which he has dubbed The Understanding. He has not suggested a grade for the climb, but it is thought that the new problem could be one of the hardest in the area, which already boasts several V15 problems.

26 year old Hukkatavial has been climbing since he was 12 years old and has completed first ascents in virtually every continent. According to his ticklist on 27crags.com he has climbed nearly 40 V14s and at least nine V15s. One of his most difficult first ascents was the still-unrepeated V15 highball problem Livin’ Large in South Africa. He is also working a difficult project, dubbed the Sisu Project, in Finland which, if completed, may be one of the most difficult boulder problems in the world.
