Ueli Steck Reaches Halfway Point on 82 Summits Project

Fourty-one summits down and 41 to go, with 53 days left. On Tuesday Ueli Steck hit the halfway point of his 82 Summits project.

Steck, a Swiss mountainieer, began the trip on June 10, alongside 25-year-old Michi Wohlleben of Germany. They planned to climb all 82 peaks over 4,000 meters in the Alps by man-power—hiking, skiing, biking and paragliding their way through Switzerland, Italy and France.

“We are doing it just for fun,” Steck wrote on Facebook. “For the love of the mountains.”

On July 7, Steck summited his 41^st peak, Zinalrothorn, but Wohlleben did not. Wohlleben took a hard landing with his paraglider after the fourth summit, putting an end to his #82Summits journey.

“It’s always an up and down…the next project will come,” Wohlleben wrote on Facebook. “Go for it Ueli Steck!”

Steck continued the mission, climbing peaks with his wife, Nicole Steck; Swiss mountaineer Andreas Steindl; Andi Wälchli, a long-time friend of Steck’s; and other members of the #82Summits team.

On June 30, Steck and Steindl summited 18 Italian peaks in a single day, as part of their “Spaghetti Tour.” At this rate, Steck has a good chance of reaching his goal early. He has until August 29 to check off the remaining 41 summits.

If he completes the project, he will have climbed 62 vertical miles and biked over 600 miles.
