BEST FOR: Cragging, Bouldering

Though marketed as a bike shoe, the Five Ten Sleuth Slip-Ons are perfect for a casual day at any crag with little to no approach. As someone in the Rock and Ice office put it, “They are going to be my go to approach shoes for Rifle,” a Colorado locale famous for steep limestone and “car belays.” Flat-soled, with no heel drop and weighing in at 10.9 ounces, these shoes look a bit like your classic Keds Champion sneaker, and with no laces or straps you can slip them on in a matter of seconds. The sole is made of Five Ten’s proprietary Stealth Rubber and the bottom is covered with lots and lots of little bumps (picture the dots on the sole of the Five Ten Guide Tennie, only more and tinier) for increased traction. The top of the shoe is a stretchy polyester weave, so it fits snugly enough that it won’t fall off.

Rock and Ice vigorously tests all gear it reviews for either 50 days or 50 pitches. This is a time-consuming process and limits the amount of new equipment we can present to our readers. Every year hundreds of new products hit store shelves, and most of these aren’t reviewed due to our stringent selection and review process. To better keep you more up to date on what is new, we present First Look. Gear in First Look has not been field tested, but is gear we think you’d like to know about as soon as it is available. Some of the gear will be reviewed using our 50 days/50 pitches criteria, in future print and online editions of Rock and Ice.
