Burly haul-bag materials in a svelte, minimalist multi-pitch backpack—that’s what you get with Mountain Hardwear’s Multi-Pitch 25 Pack. This 1 lb 12 oz top-loader comes with a host of nifty, little features that we enjoyed on the outings we’ve taken it on thus far—from 12-pitch sport climbs to five-pitch ice routes.
The bottom is made of a sturdy ballistic nylon, while the top and front are made from 600D TPU (think of a generic haul bag’s body material), so you don’t have to worry about tearing a hole in it as it’s dangling from the belay or you’re dragging it up the crux pitch on a tagline.
Your bulkier multi-pitch essentials—warm layers, big bags of trail mix, a wagbag perhaps—fit comfortably in the 25-liter main compartment, while a smaller, easily accessible, internal mesh pocket allows you to store smaller incidentals—phone, headlamp, chapstick, lucky rabbit’s foot perhaps—and see what’s in there without opening it.
The Multi-Pitch 25 sports a stowable mesh pocket on the side that can accommodate a one-and-half-liter water bottle or anything of a similar size. Of great convenience on a day of trad multi-pitching (especially when your harness gear loops are already overcrowded with that quadruple rack you clearly didn’t need) are the bag’s auxiliary gear loops—one on each side. Other useful features include a strap for securing the rope on the outside of the pack on the approach and a daisy chain sewn onto the front panel.
