The Galileo, essentially an updated version of Five Ten’s time-tested Anasazi Velcro, is the first Five Ten shoe with its new Onyx rubber, a compound touted as Five Ten’s stickiest and most durable. On the rock, testers reported that the Onyx felt a smidge stickier than Five Ten’s popular Stealth C4 rubber, a finding supported by our friction-board tests. Time will tell how well Onyx rubber holds up — the soles on our test shoes showed little wear after five weeks of use, but a full season of testing is necessary to properly evaluate wear. Look for an update on Onyx rubber in a future issue of Rock and Ice.
The Galileo — best sized as your street shoe — is a bouldering, sport and gym machine.
The Galileo — best sized as your street shoe — is a bouldering, sport and gym machine. The relative stiffness made edging on micro footholds a solid snap — virtually any point on the sole’s circumference could be used with the same support/performance of standard big-toe edging. Like the Anasazi Velcro, the Galileo toe box allows your toes to curl, meaning the shoe is more sporty than trad, though the shoe performed well in thin cracks and is an impressive all-around shoe if sized comfortably. fiveten.com
