As a much younger Bohemian, I used to sleep on the bare floor because I thought it would make me into a tough little climber. I now know that if I don’t get a good night’s sleep, I won’t climb well come morning. Given the choice, you’ll now find me in the lap of luxury.
A line of inflatable sleeping pads is a new offering from Nemo Equipment. At the top of the fleet of three pads is the Tuo Luxury, the thickest, biggest and most comfortable of the bunch. The Tuo Luxury is actually two pads in one, a marriage of two separate inflatable membranes. Inflate the bottom membrane to full capacity to protect yourself from rocks and uneven surfaces, then micro-adjust the amount of air in the top membrane to give yourself a firmer or softer bed. This feature also adds redundancy, so if you happen to spring a leak in one cell, there’s another.
At its thickest, the Tuo Luxury inflates to a comfortable 2.3 inches thick, but it weighs 3.6 pounds—not ideal for the fastest and lightest trips to the mountains, but great for car camping and basecamp. That said, I will gladly carry an extra pound or two if it means I get to sleep like a baby.
The rectangular pad, at 72 inches long (6.3 feet) and 25 inches wide, gave me more than enough room to toss and turn, and I never woke up lying off to the side, half in the dirt. The Tuo Luxury rolls up like an extra-thick yoga mat and packs in a supplied tote. The large size meant that I had to strap the pad to the outside of my backpack.
What would an inflatable bed be without an inflatable pillow? The Fillo is one of my favorite new accessories of the season. Using a bit of memory foam and a three-inch thick inflatable cell, the Fillo is a comfortable pillow that, once again, you can adjust to the perfect firmness. The Fillo rolls up to the size of a Nalgene bottle—not a big deal to take on trips to the backcountry or on international flights.
