Weekend Whipper: Falling Sharp Things at the 2019 Ice Climbing World Cup Finals
Falling ice tools were just one of the exciting things to happen at the World Cup in Denver, Colorado last weekend, February 23 to 24, 2019.
The Rock and Ice team was out in force at the Ice Climbing World Cup finals in Denver last weekend – the first time they’ve come to the city! It was a great weekend of competition and there were lots of exciting whips to boot – including a couple that our very own Executive Editor Alison Osius caught on camera.

In the first whip, Mira Alhonsuo of Finland takes a back-slapping pendulum into the competition wall.
In the second whip, Cora Lie Jary of France loses purchase on the swinging volumes – and a tool, too. To add insult to injury, the tool ends up clunking him on the head on the way down. We don’t think she was too broken up though: she was competing in the World Cup, after all. Pretty dang impressive!
Happy Friday and climb safe this weekend!
