Weekend Whipper: Invert Offwidth Struggles
Going for invert offwidth FAs ain't for the faint of heart!
This one comes from Mary Eden (@tradprincess), the brains and talent behind @bigbeautypitches.
Mary went on a trip to Spain, where Palan Martín (@palan_martin) showed her some of the local rock.
Mary told Rock and Ice, “Going for invert offwidth FAs ain’t for the faint of heart. Palan took me out to two routes he had found. One was easy for him. One was easy for me. This one was the one he had difficulty with.
“He sent it though. 5th go. Via head torch in the dark… tenacity like this… hell yea.
“Also: Helmets matter. But. The start and finish of this pitch prevent the climber wearing one. You simply don’t fit if you have a helmet on.
“Offwidth climbing is risky. It’s different from other styles of climbing. Before you start invert offwidth climbing you have to ask yourself, Is that risk okay for me? Today? On this climb? Ever? I’ve walked away plenty of times from head-smashing wide climbs. Evaluate anew every day and for every route.”
Happy Friday and climb safe this weekend!
